Arsenal has finalized the acquisition of Italian defender Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna, concurrently signaling Emile Smith Rowe’s anticipated exit from Emirates Stadium.

Calafiori, at 22, emerged as a pivotal target for the Gunners this season, securing his transfer for a considerable £42 million fee. The defender has committed to a five-year tenure with Arsenal, having represented Italy in their Euro 2024 campaign.

“We extend a warm welcome to Riccardo and his family to Arsenal. His addition is significant and fortifies our defensive line,” remarked manager Mikel Arteta.

“Riccardo embodies a substantial personality and distinct capabilities, enhancing our strength as we aspire for major accolades. His development in recent seasons with Bologna and Italy has been remarkable, showcasing substantial progression over the past year.

“We eagerly anticipate working with Riccardo, integrating him into our squad, and supporting his growth in the forthcoming years.”

Riccardo Calafiori, also adept at playing left-back, marks Arsenal’s second significant summer acquisition, following the permanent move of David Raya from Brentford.

While Calafiori’s arrival is celebrated, English international Smith Rowe seems poised to transfer to London rivals Fulham. The 24-year-old, a product of the Hale End academy, has faced challenges breaking into the first team, with injuries further impeding his progress.

Smith Rowe managed only 13 Premier League appearances last season. The PA news agency confirms a deal valued up to £34 million with Fulham, consisting of an initial £27 million payment and an additional £7 million in potential add-ons, setting a new club-record deal for the Whites.
