Manchester United have officially announced the acquisition of Moroccan midfielder Sofyan Amrabat, securing him on an initial loan arrangement from Fiorentina for the 2023-24 season.
This move puts an end to the summer’s rampant speculations regarding the 27-year-old’s future, with several clubs expressing interest in his services.
Throughout the early stages of the season, Amrabat remained absent from Fiorentina’s squad amid ongoing rumors of a potential departure. It has been widely reported that he had been holding out for a transfer to Old Trafford.
The confirmation from Manchester United establishes the arrival of the Moroccan international on an initial loan, with the option for the club to secure his services permanently next summer.
The loan agreement is reported to cost Erik ten Hag’s side €10 million (£8.6 million), with a purchase option worth €20 million (£17.1 million) plus an additional €5 million (£4.3 million) in potential add-ons at the conclusion of the 2023-24 campaign.
Upon the announcement of the deal, Amrabat expressed his excitement, stating, “It is a tremendous honor to join Manchester United. I have patiently waited for this moment, and I am someone who follows their heart, now proudly representing the club of my dreams.”
He added, “I am a passionate player, and I am determined to bring that enthusiasm to the squad. I will pour my heart into every action for the team. I am well aware of Erik ten Hag’s coaching style and player requirements, as he played a significant role in my development during my earlier career. I am confident he will bring out the best in my abilities, contributing to the team’s success this season.”
John Murtough, Manchester United’s football director, commented on the acquisition, saying, “We have been monitoring Sofyan’s progress for quite some time, and we are delighted to welcome him to Manchester United. His unwavering commitment, high-energy playing style, and technical skills align seamlessly with the ethos of our evolving squad.”
Murtough continued, “We believe that Sofyan’s mentality, dynamism, and technical prowess will bolster the squad as we aim for success across all competitions this season.”
Amrabat boasts an impressive record with Fiorentina, accumulating 107 appearances across all competitions, including 49 outings in the previous season. His contributions helped Fiorentina reach the final of the Coppa Italia and the Europa Conference League.
Furthermore, the midfielder showcased his talent on the international stage, making a significant impact for Morocco during the 2022 World Cup, aiding his nation in reaching the semi-finals of the tournament held in Qatar.
The acquisition of Amrabat adds to Manchester United’s busy deadline day, with Altay Bayindir, Sergio Reguilon, and Jonny Evans also joining the Old Trafford ranks before the transfer window’s closure.
